Chelsea 2-0 Over Manchester United; Carrick Assails His Defense
Seven Lights

Manchester United’s winless run stretched to nine matches in all competitions Saturday with a 2-0 Premier League defeat at Chelsea, and their manager, Michael Carrick, laid the result squarely at the door of his defenders.
Mr. Carrick took particular issue with the marking on the opening goal, scored by Morgan Rogers. “Carrick bemoans Man Utd defending in Chelsea loss,” BBC Sport captioned a clip in which the manager singles out the back line’s shape as Rogers beat them to the first goal of the afternoon. The second goal settled the contest beyond United’s reach, and the margin told the story of an afternoon in which the visitors created little and conceded twice.
The deeper measure of the day is the streak. Nine matches without a win is the longest such run of Mr. Carrick’s tenure, and it arrives with a European fixture Tuesday against Roma and a league schedule that offers no soft landing. Asked afterward about his own position, Mr. Carrick was brief: Sky Sports reported that he expects to remain in charge against Roma, and Sports Illustrated reported he offered a one-word assessment when pressed on his future at the club.
For Chelsea, the result restored some order after a season of uneven form. The home side controlled the match at Stamford Bridge and were rarely seriously tested, and the afternoon doubled as a demonstration of the gulf that currently separates the two clubs’ campaigns.
Whether confidence in a manager is measured in results or in patience is a question United’s board now faces. Mr. Carrick’s expectation of being on the touchline Tuesday is not the same as a guarantee, and a loss to Roma midweek would put the nine-match run beside his name in every account of the club’s season. The board has made no public statement on his position.
United’s next opportunity to arrest the slide comes Tuesday at home in Europe; Chelsea turn to the midweek round with three points restored and, for one afternoon at least, the arguments settled.
