Four people were killed and 15 were injured in three separate shootings that unfolded within an hour and 15 minutes in Dallas’s Deep Ellum neighborhood early Sunday, in what was among the most violent of several mass shootings across the United States on Halloween weekend.
Dallas police chief Daniel Comeaux said officers were still trying to determine whether the shootings in the entertainment district were related, and said it was not immediately known why they began. Some arrests were made, though he did not specify how many or what charges were involved. “This is a really big scene. It’s spread out,” Chief Comeaux said. “We are interviewing some individuals right now that we have arrested, still trying to figure out exactly how it ties into all the shootings out here.”
Deep Ellum is a district of shops, restaurants and music venues in downtown Dallas. The shootings followed Halloween festivities in the city.
Violence also struck college communities. One person was killed and eight were wounded in a shooting near Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, after the annual Magic City Classic football game on Saturday night, police said. Birmingham police chief Michael Pickett said most spectators had left the stadium when the shooting began along Graymont Avenue, where vendors had set up. He said he was “very grateful that more people weren’t injured.” A police spokesperson said one person was detained for questioning and multiple weapons were secured.
In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot late Saturday near the University of Delaware campus, police Lieutenant Greg D’Elia said. All six were taken to hospitals for treatment. Fox News reported that shootings near five college communities in Indiana, Delaware, Alabama, Illinois and Colorado left three people dead and at least 29 injured over the weekend.
Dallas police said the investigation into any connections among the Deep Ellum shootings continued, with interviews of those in custody expected to run into Sunday evening.
