Michael Mann was released from a hospital on Sunday after a weapon discharged while holstered at a gun range in Los Angeles, leaving the 83-year-old director with what his representative called a superficial, subcutaneous wound to his leg.
The accident occurred at about 4 p.m. Saturday at The Range LA, a members-only club in Los Angeles, according to TMZ, which first reported it. Mr Mann, described by a person familiar with the circumstances as an experienced target shooter for decades, was taken to a hospital, treated and released.
The episode drew renewed attention to what comes next for the director of “Heat”: “Heat 2,” the sequel to his 1995 crime drama, is set to begin filming early next year. At the Lumière festival in Lyon, where he accepted an honorary prize, Mr Mann spoke at length about using digital de-aging technology in the sequel.
“I don’t experiment with technology gratuitously. I always do it for a reason,” he said. “With ‘Heat 2,’ aging and de-aging will be very important. It’s a very difficult thing to do, but I think it’s the first time it’s going to be done well.”
He added that the production faces the ordinary constraints of a large film: “‘Heat 2’ is an expensive movie to make, and the challenge is to make it look like a big movie. You have to be smart about where you put your money.”
Mr Mann built his reputation on exacting realism, from “Thief” in 1981 and “Manhunter” in 1986 through “Heat,” “Collateral,” “Miami Vice,” “Public Enemies” and “Ferrari.” The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responding to a shots-fired call determined the discharge was accidental.
Filming on “Heat 2” is scheduled to start early next year.
