Real Madrid reach verbal agreement to sign United teenager JJ Gabriel

Real Madrid have reached a verbal agreement with JJ Gabriel and his representatives to sign Manchester United’s 16-year-old forward, and expect to complete the move in January, sources have told BBC Sport. No club-to-club talks have been held.
Madrid intend to sign Gabriel through a Fifa rule that allows clubs in the European Union to secure young players on professional contracts if they hold an EU passport. Gabriel is eligible for one through both his parents and has secured the document, which is expected to ease a move to Spain. Fifa would have to sign off on the arrangement, and United are on alert regarding any potential breach of regulations. The club would be due a compensation fee should Gabriel leave, although the figure would be lower if he joined a side outside the Premier League.
Gabriel told United in September that he wanted to leave the club and is believed to be training in Spain. He joined the academy in 2022, scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut, and played against Atlético Madrid in a pre-season friendly in Stockholm at the age of 15 while training with the first team.
His production carried honours unusual for his age. Last season Gabriel became the youngest winner of United’s academy player of the year award and was named the Premier League’s under-18 player of the season. Had he remained available, he would have been in the squad for the Carabao Cup third-round defeat by Brighton on September 16, and an appearance would have made him the youngest player in the club’s history.
Barcelona and Paris St-Germain had also been alerted by his availability before Madrid moved ahead. Real offer the prospect of progression to senior football through their B team, Castilla, who play in the regionalised Spanish third tier.
The case tests the rules governing minors between associations. United can contest any deal they judge improper, while Madrid have made clear they consider the passport route lawful. The January window will decide whether the verbal agreement survives regulatory scrutiny.
