Jack Campbell, the Detroit Lions linebacker, was hospitalized overnight after sustaining a neck injury during Sunday’s 19-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings.
Campbell, 26, was hurt while making a tackle on tight end TJ Hockenson in the fourth quarter, striking his head in the process, according to BBC Sport. He lay face down and motionless for several minutes as Ford Field fell quiet. Medical staff treated him on the field for about nine minutes before he was strapped to a board, placed on a stretcher and driven off on a cart toward the tunnel to applause, with teammates and most of the coaching staff surrounding him. He did not signal to the crowd.
“He was breathing, he was alert when he left,” coach Dan Campbell told the Lions Radio Network. “He’s in the hospital, they’re running some tests. We don’t know anything else. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”
Quarterback Jared Goff said: “Jack’s deal was definitely scary. It just brings you back to reality for a moment that he’s a husband and a father. We’re praying for him and hope he’s going to be alright. If anyone is tough enough to get through something like that, it’s going to be him.”
The Lions confirmed Campbell was transported to a hospital, where he remained overnight, and that he had suffered a neck injury. No diagnosis was released.
Campbell, a 6-foot-3, 240-pounder from Iowa, is in his fourth season and was a first-round pick in 2023. He was named first-team All-Pro last season after leading the defence with 176 tackles, and had recorded 57 tackles this season before Sunday, three before he left the field.
Detroit went on to beat the Vikings 19-15 and closes the week with a nationally televised game on Thursday.
